There’s no denying the value of Batman as a franchise. Christopher Nolan proved that point pretty well when he took a film franchise that had become a joke, and turned it into an Oscar juggernaut that captured the Caped Crusader in all his Frank Miller-like glory. Critics were happy, the fans were happy, Warner Brothers was happy…it was awesome. But now it’s over. Nolan made the decision to end his trilogy willingly. Probably a good thing right? “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain…” Ring any bells?
So now we are here. Living in a world where there is no creative mastermind behind the Batman franchise. Waiting… just waiting to see what’s next. Well, it turns out Warner Brothers has a plan… kind of. Warner Brothers plans to not have a “Stand Alone” Batman film till at least 2017. This is probably a good thing. Even with properties like Batman, you need to give yourself a little breathing room between major projects. So what’s next for the Caped Crusader? Well I guess there’s only one way to find out… make a list of possible options.
- Batman Beyond – The Movie
So this is the newest of rumors on the rumor wagon for a possible successor to the Dark Night Trilogy. Michael Uslan, who has produced every Batman film to date(that’s not actually true if you count the 1966 Adam West Batman movie, but that’s just me being a dick), has suggested that he would be interested in doing a like action Beyond. Will it happen? Probably not. How long did it take DC Comics to throw the cowl on Dick Greyson? 50+ years? I don’t see Warner Brothers biting. People know Batman is Bruce Wayne just like they know Superman is Clarke Kent. To fuck with the original DNA of these major market characters is not in the cards.

Reboot the bitch. That’s what the latest craze has been right? There are a ton of people who would take over the franchise and bring their own unique vision to the deep immersible place that is the Batman universe right? No seriously. Seriously. Zack Snyder is already doing Man of Steel you can’t use him. I’m serious Warner Brothers. How about a Duncan Jones or a Neil Blomkamp? You were planning on giving it to Darren Aronofsky at one point… why not try that? Either way, there is a TON of great back stories in the Batman archives that I would love to see on the silver screen. Long Halloween anyone?

- Use the license for other mediums like…TV!
Batman: The Animated Series was a groundbreaking show. It was the darkest cartoon I have ever seen on Saturday morning TV. So lets one up that shit. No really! We have had to sit through two live action Superman TV shows past 20 years. Fucking Green Arrow has his own live action show! Let’s see a show that takes place in the Gotham that doesn’t necessarily revolve around Batman. Think about it. You have Nightwing, Red Robin, Robin, Batgirl, Orical, Joker, Red Hood, etc. There is so much content to make and shows like Arrow and Smallville have proved that TV can be a successful medium both financially and creatively. Just think about guys that all I’m asking.

So there you have it. Chances are we will be getting a new film series, from a new creative team…is that a good thing? Well we’ll have to wait see. As long as we don’t give it to J.J. Abrams, I’m set. Love the dude, but come on man. You have Star Wars AND Star Trek! Spread the love around sir.
