First off, this is not a review. It’s a recommendation. Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury is an insane film for many reasons. First off, its racist. Super racist. It’s sort of like a cross between Crash and Tropic Thunder. Sounds great right? Well it is. It’s fucking ridiculous. I knew I was going to enjoy this film for the opening credits. It was the song. I guess it’s called “Donkey Freedom” and it’s performed by no other than my boy Michael Starr of Steel Panther fame…and if you don’t know who Steel Panther are..get off your ass. check them out HERE.

This film chronicles an angry Vietnam Vet’s (Kevin Sorbo) returned home to LA, to find that his wife has been banging a local Mexican poolboy. You know, just like in Deer Hunter? For the record, it’s great to see Kevin Sorbo. I was never really a huge Hercules: The Legendary Journey, Andromeda, or Kull The Conqueror fan, but for some reason, I love that guy. He’s a dude who seems to genuinely enjoy what he does, and finding an actor who does what he does because he enjoys his work, and not for the money, is pretty refreshing. This film also stars Ross Patterson, who portrays one of my new favorite characters in film, Saint James St. James, Danny Trejo as the angry Mexican crime lord, and Jason Mewes as Doug. A very interesting collection of actors, but Sorbo steals the show. He has this leading man quality to him that just can’t be denied…he was Hercules after all.
I really don’t like when reviews, and previews discuss major plot lines and possible spoilers, so I’m not going to do that. I am simply recommending this film to people who enjoy low budget films. Films that are passion projects, films that people make because they want to, not because they are getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to make some piece of shit Transformers movie. This film was not written for theaters, this film was not made to be a huge financial success… it was made to be enjoy by people who like cheesy, low budget films, that, at times, don’t even necessarily make sense. If you enjoy The Room, Troll 2, MST3K, or any film that tries to be awesome and fails, check out Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury. This film is for you, plus it is streaming on Netflix so what do you have to lose? Plus, fucking Mark Curry for Hanging With Mr. Cooper is in it, so what the fuck are you waiting for?
